B.J., a sheltered high-school graduate, is preparing to choose a college when his father becomes concerned that he has lost touch with his cultural roots. His grandfather Joe takes him on a cross-country road trip, supposedly to visit colleges, but the journey quickly becomes a chaotic series of unexpected encounters and lessons about family, history, and adulthood. As the two travel across America, their very different personalities gradually bring them closer together.
